How to export prices

Learn how to export prices from the Dashboard to work with data in Excel spreadsheets for contract negotiation or analysis, or download in PDF format to add to attach to contracts or use in business reports or presentations.

INTRODUCTION

Data or images may be printed, exported and copied for use in spreadsheets, reports and presentations (as aligned with the terms and conditions of your Fastmarkets data license agreement).

Copying data for the Excel Add-in requires installation and login. The Excel Add-in can be downloaded and installed here: https://www.fastmarkets.com/excel-download

Further information, help and templates can be found here:

https://www.fastmarkets.com/excel-support

EXPORT DATA AND IMAGES FROM THE DASHBOARD

The export menu can be found in the top-right corner of each widget. (Note: It is not possible to export from pre-configured widgets.) Menu options are the same for the Single Price Tile, Multi Price Table and Historic Data Table widgets.

You can copy or export selected prices from Single Price Tile, Multi Price Table and Historic Data Table widgets in the following formats:
  • Copy for Excel Add-in (Excel Add-in required to copy formulae)
  • Copy values only (static data)
  • Export – Comma-separated values (.csv; file saved to Downloads folder)
  • Export – Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
  • PDF document (pdf)

The Price Chart widget also includes the option to export an image of your chart in a .png format.

EXPORT A WIDGET AS A PDF

You can export the entire widget as a pdf file that can be used as a visual representation, for example, for adding to contracts or slide presentations. PDF exports are available for Single Price Tile, Multi Price Table, Price Chart and Historic Price Table widgets as well as for news articles.

To export a widget to a pdf, click the Export menu and choose Export widget as PDF Document (.pdf)

You may be asked by your browser if you want to download a file. Click Confirm.

The pdf for this Single Price Tile will download and be available for you to view and save. It does not download all of the data in your widget, but it will show a 1 year sparkline chart, the latest price, price range, assessed date, month, monthly average and pricing rationale if available.

The Historic Price Table will export what is displayed which includes the "fill settings" selected of how the historical data displays as well as the date range, for up to 6 symbols plus the price fields selected. The symbols which are displayed in the pdf are the first 6 symbols which will export if you have selected more in the widget.

The screenshot bellow shows how the Multi Price Table will export the symbol, description, assessment date, price, percentage change and the monthly average. It will export all of the symbols in the multi price widget, not just the symbols that are visible on the workspace if you have resized the widget to make it smaller.

If you require more detail of the data or for further data manipulation, it is suggested to use the Excel download instead.

Historical data from the Price Chart widget will be exported for the date selected at the top of the chart and will include all prices and field labels displayed (up to eight prices with high/mid/low would export 24 columns of data).
All image export files can be found in the local Downloads folder, labeled with the date and timestamp of export.

PRINT OR EXPORT DATA FROM A NEWS LIST WIDGET

News articles can be exported and printed for use outside of the Dashboard. Click Launch Article > Print Article to export
into pdf format and print. The article will have a white background and show the name of the user who exported it, with the date and timestamp.

EXPORT PRICES TO MICROSOFT EXCEL

Latest assessment, monthly average or historical prices can be exported to Microsoft Excel in several different formats enabling you to work with Fastmarkets data in your spreadsheets for further analysis. This can be static data or linked to Excel Add-in functions which can be saved and refreshed with the latest or historical prices as you need it without the need to export again.

Copying data for the Excel Add-in requires installation and login. The Excel Add-in can be downloaded and installed here: https://www.fastmarkets.com/excel-download

Further information, help and templates can be found here:

Copy for Excel Add-in

The screenshot below shows an example of the results pasted into the Excel Add-in (requires installation and login first to display formulae). From a Single Price Tile widget, all available historical data for the displayed data fields (high/low or midpoint for actual assessments or averages, for instance) is copied. When the prices are pasted into the Excel Add-In, it will use the GetPriceHistory function, creating formulae enabling the data to update with the latest published price history when the spreadsheet is refreshed.

The Multi Price Table widget will enable the entire table of data to be copied – not just what is in view in the widget (if the table includes a longer list of prices).

Prices can be exported to Excel from the Historic Price Table widget or Data view of the Price Chart widget either with a formula to the Excel Add-in. By default, exporting historical prices will "carry forward" or repeat prices on each weekday until the next assessment price is published.

It is possible to amend these "fill settings" to determine how historical prices display in the widget and export to Excel. These are the available options:

  • ValuesOnly: The dates and prices returned will only display when assessed or published prices are available
  • CarryForward: If there is no published price for a given day, the function will “carry forward” – or repeat – the last available price for ALL WEEKDAYS until the price is updated again. NOTE: public holidays will not be excluded. Example: the price is assessed weekly (on Monday). For Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday the function will return Monday’s price.
  • Null: ALL WEEKDAYS INCLUDING HOLIDAYS will be displayed in the Date column. If there is no published price for a given date, the corresponding price in that row will be blank.
To make your selection click on the Settings panel:
Prices will be exported with the above fill settings option you have selected. Click on the Export menu to make your selection:

The following scenarios are currently not supported by the Excel add-in. This is because the GetPriceHistory function returns historical data for a single symbol. In such cases, the Copy for Excel add-in option is disabled

  • Historic Price Table:
    • For any average prices selected it is only possible to export with a Value Only setting
    • If you have selected multiple symbols it is only possible to export actual assessment prices using Null or Carry Forward settings
  • Price Chart widget (Data view)
    • For any average prices selected it is only possible to export with a Value Only setting
    • If you have selected multiple symbols it is only possible to export actual assessment prices using Null or Carry Forward settings
    • When you select multiple symbols and Value Only fill setting and the Price Calculation Type is not the same for all symbols e.g. one Actual, one Monthly Average

Copy values only

The screenshot at right shows the results pasted into any instance of Microsoft Excel. Please note that this is a copy of static data – it will not update once a new assessment is published.

Export comma-separated values (.csv) and Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)

Exporting data to a .csv or .xlsx file format will automatically save the file in the local Downloads folder. The filename will include the date and timestamp from when the data was downloaded. Please note that this is an export of static data – it will not update once a new assessment is published. Exported image files contain the price symbol; price description and field names; username of the person who has exported the chart; download date and time; and the Fastmarkets watermark and data license agreement message. The chart will be displayed on a white background, as shown in the following screenshot.

Export exchange prices to Excel

It is not yet possible to use the Copy for Excel Add-in functionality to export exchange prices. However, Single Price Tile, Price Chart, Multi Price Table and Historic Price Table widgets can be copied as values only or exported as .xls or .csv files.

The examples below show how prices can be copied with values only (will not update in Excel) from a Multi Price Table widget that contains physical and exchange prices.

Export converted prices to Excel

When you export data to Excel that has been converted from one currency to another, a message displays in Excel to explain, “Currency and unit conversions have been applied to the values in this table. All compatible prices are in…” The wording then goes on to explain the currency and units to which the data has been converted.

When you click into the formula, the conversion is also visible in the function.

Please note that it is not possible to convert and export exchange prices from the Dashboard into Excel with formulae. But it is possible to copy values only – you will see the message below to denote that only the physical prices have been converted:
