Custom Markets - Emission

The Emissions Report displays Fossil CO₂ emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) as well as Biogenic emissions.

By default, the report opens in Data view, showing Fossil CO₂ emissions (Scope 1) per machine and by product, expressed in ton(ne)s per ton(ne) produced. Machines/mills are ordered from the lowest to the highest total emissions.

When the selected Scope is changed to include Biogenic or Scope 2 emissions, the ranking is automatically updated, again displaying machines or mills from the lowest to the highest total emissions.

General Report Options

Balance Date: Select the date for which the report values are displayed.

Format: The default format is by machine (paper machine or pulp dryer) and by product.

Type: The default setting shows Fossil CO₂ emissions per ton(ne) produced, but this can be changed to daily or annual emissions.

Scope: Allows selection of Scope 2 and Biogenic emissions in addition to Scope 1.

Sort By function

The Sort by function allows to sort the Emissions report by different categories, enabling users to view and analyze the data from different perspectives. The default setting is Group By None, and Then Sort By Total Scope 1. Changed settings of Sort By or Group By remain active when moving between Data and Graph views.

Group by

The Group By function allows users to organize machines and mills according to different dimensions. This helps tailor the view depending on the scope of the market being analyzed. You can group the data by:

  • Product – when multiple products are included.
  • Company – when multiple mills, machines, and products are included.
  • Mill Name – when several products are included in the market.
  • World Region – when more than one world region is included.
  • Region – when several countries or sub‑regions are included.
  • Config - sorts the paper mill/machine configuration (integrated, semi-integrated, recycled, etc)

Select the grouping that you wish to use and click on Sort Table. Selecting None on Group by will take you back to the default setting.

After selecting Sort By, the Then Sort By function allows users to organize the Scope 1 emissions for machines/mills by Mill Name or based on any of the different fuel categories (see dropdown on screenshot below). Click on Sort Table for the sorting to take effect.

Selecting Total Scope 1 will take you back to the default sorting.

The Emissions Graph displays machines or mills ranked from lowest to highest emissions, based on the selected Scope.

Clicking on any bar opens details for the selected mill, including capacity per day and per year, as well as emissions of each fuels for the selected Scope.

Selecting Label Machine highlights the machine both on the graph and in the data report. Selecting Remove Label removes this highlight.

Clicking on Mill Details will take you to the mill's mill details page to further analyze it. See Mills Section in Analytical Cornerstone in the Fastmarkets support.

Emissions data are calculated from simulated energy and fuel consumption estimates using default conversion factors, for example those available at: https://stat.fi/tup/khkinv/khkaasut_polttoaineluokitus.html.

Scope 1 emissions represent direct fossil CO₂ emissions from fuels burned at the mill. Fastmarkets also estimates biogenic CO₂ emissions, primarily from black liquor and bark. The underlying fuel consumption data can be reviewed in the Consumption Reports in Analytical Cornerstone.

As purchased steam and electricity consumption is also estimated, Fastmarkets RISI is able to calculate Scope 2 indirect fossil CO₂ emissions.

Fastmarkets does not currently provide Scope 3 fossil CO₂ emissions, which cover emissions associated with the production and delivery of non‑energy‑related raw materials (such as non‑integrated fiber, chemicals, and other materials and equipment). Scope 3 emissions are planned for inclusion towards the end of 2026 or in 2027.
