Custom Markets - Machine Productivity

The Machine Productivity report displays machine productivity data for all machines included in the selected custom market. The report provides a graph and a table view of machine productivity mainly based on the amount of FMT or FST produced per day and per machine width (in meters for metric setting and in inches for the US customary setting). We always take into account 357 full production days. The Data report also shows many other machine specifications that determine the productivity.

Report Options

Balance Date: Shows the most recent date when any mill‑level changes required a rebalance of the mills included in the market. Can be changed to check the state of the market at an earlier point in time.

Highlight/label: Opens the highlighting tools. For details, see the How to highlight and label mills or companies article on the support hub.

Compare Dates: Allows comparison of two different cost dates within the same view. Only available on Data report view. For details, see the How can I compare the cost at two specific points in time article on the support hub.

Custom Markets - Machine Productivity - Graph

The Machine Productivity report shows the machine productivity for all machines included in the selected Custom Market.

The X‑axis represents the capacity of the machines. (e.g., 500,000 finished short tons in the example below).

The Y‑axis represents the number of tonnes produced per day per unit of machine width, in FST/day/inches for US customary unit setting, or in FMT/day/meter for metric unit setting.

Each symbol (triangle) on the chart represents a paper machine or, when a market pulp grade is selected, a pulp dryer.

The symbols are color‑coded by company, allowing users to quickly distinguish assets owned by different companies.

Selecting a machine or mill symbol displays detailed information, including:

  • Company name
  • Mill name
  • Machine number
  • Production per day per unit of machine width (as per user preferences: ST/day/inches for US customary unit setting, and in FMT/day/meter for metric unit setting)
  • Cost quartile (Q)
  • Capacity per day and per year

Users can label a specific machine by selecting Label Machine. Label can be removed at any time by selecting Remove Label.

Selecting Mill Details navigates the user to the Mill Details page for more in‑depth information. Visit Mills Section in Analytical Cornerstone in the Fastmarkets support for details.

Update Graph Format allows to Indicate By, the colors and legend automatically adjust based on the selected item:

  • None – Default setting by machine, color coding by company but without legend.
  • World Region – Shows machines of the same world regions/continents in the same color.
  • Region - Shows different countries or sub-regions if applicable in different colors.
  • Company – Same as None, but the legend shows company names.
  • Highlight – Removes all color coding, allows to better look at a specific machine info or export a neutrally colored graph.

To return to the original indication settings, click on None.

To the right of the Update Graph Format button, there is an Export button that allows exporting the chart into different formats: PDF, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and JPG.

Custom Markets - Machine Productivity - Data

The Machine Productivity Data report lists the machines in the same order as in the graph view—ranked from the highest productivity to the lowest productivity machine, based on the amount of FMT or FST produced per day and per machine width (in meters for metric setting and in inches for the US customary setting). We always take into account 357 full production days.

Click on the Data tab to access the data report. For each machine the Machine Productivity report shows:

  • PM#: Shows the number of the specific paper machine or pulp dryer.
  • Machine Capacity FST/D or FST/Y, FMT/D or FMT/Y: provides the machine’s production capacity in both daily and annual terms, depending on the preferred Units. Note that the capacity shown is the total machine capacity and may include other grades or products outside of this market.
  • Install Year: year the paper machine or pulp dryer was installed.
  • Last Rebuild: year the paper machine or pulp dryer was last rebuilt.
  • Age Install: how many years ago the machine was installed.
  • Age Rebuild: how many years ago the machine was last rebuilt.
  • Age Technical: technical age, calculated considering all identified rebuilds of the machine.
  • Make: machine supplier (at the time of installation - supplier may have been absorbed by another supplier due to M&A in the meantime). Occasionally, a major machine rebuild can be extremely important so that this machine supplier replaces the original one.
  • Model: type of paper machine/dryer. This could be a brand name.
  • Trim: trim width of the machine, showing in meters (metric units) or in inches (US customary) determining the width of the finished paper or dried pulp.
  • Speed: maximum speed of the machine, showing in MPM (meters per minute) for metric units, and in FPM (feet per minute) for US customary setting.
  • Productivity: FMT/D/M (finished metric tonnes per day per meter for metric units) or FST/D/Inches (finished short tons per day per inches) for US customary setting.

Note that the machine age calculation is from the year of Fastmarkets RISI's last balance of this mill, and may thus not correspond to that from the current calendar year.

Sort By

The Sort by function allows to sort the Machine Productivity data report by different categories, enabling users to view and analyze the data from different perspectives. The default setting is Group By None, and Sort By Productivity. Changed settings of Sort By or Group By remain active when moving from Data to Graph view.

Group by

The Group By function allows users to organize machines according to different dimensions. This helps tailor the view depending on the scope of the market being analyzed. You can group the data by:

  • Company – when multiple mills, machines, and products are included.
  • Mill Name – when several products are included in the market.
  • World Region – when more than one world region is included.
  • Region – when several countries or sub‑regions are included.

Select the grouping that you wish to use, possibly add Then Sort By and click on Sort Table. Selecting None on Group By will take you back to the default setting.

Then Sort By contains several machine specifications that the report can be sorted by: Year Installed, Last Rebuild, Age Installed, Age Rebuild, Capacity, Trim, Speed and Productivity. Selecting Productivity will take you back to the default setting.

In the data report, each grouping displays the total capacity (per day and per year). Average, minimum and maximum are by capacity and show the relevant values (trim width, speed and machine productivity) on the right end of the report.

The Export button on the right-hand side enables the export of the data report to Excel with the Sorting that has been set.
