How does Fastmarkets RISI update the data? Backend Updates Regional Unit Costs Mass and Energy Balance

How does Fastmarkets RISI update the data?

Fastmarkets continuously updates pulp, paper, wood mill, and bioenergy plant data. While updates occur regularly, the frequency can vary by mill.

Backend Updates

The underlying backend database is updated daily to capture major industry changes such as:

  • Mill rebuilds
  • Restarts
  • New mill openings
  • Ownership changes
  • Other significant operational developments

These changes are then published to the live applications weekly.

Regional Unit Costs

Regional unit cost data is updated quarterly.

  • In some cases, additional verification may be required, which can cause a slight delay.
  • Fastmarkets sources this information from a wide range of industry inputs, including company filings, press releases, environmental reports, government publications, market analysis, direct mill contacts and more.

Mass and Energy Balance

The mass and energy balance is an estimate created by Fastmarkets’ cost engineers, assisted by their Analytical Cornerstone modelling database. It is primarily based on publicly available information, including:

  • Regional Unit Costs
  • Mill consumption and staffing (manning) data

Fastmarkets also incorporates:

  • Survey responses
  • Phone calls or other direct communication with mills

Note: Mills do not provide Fastmarkets with their cost data.
